Our justice system is porous – Journalist writes as criminal suspect is re-arrested two weeks after he was nabbed and ‘handed over to police’ in Benue

Dec 6, 2022

A journalist, Ahokegh Malema Collins Gmb, has expressed shock over the release of a criminal suspect, two weeks after he was arrested in Makurdi and handed over to the police.

The suspect was re-arrested by the Benue State Community Volunteer Guards, BSCVG, and paraded alongside others on Monday, December 5, 2022.

According to Ahokegh, this is the second time in two months a suspect arrested by BSCVG was allegedly released by the police.

“ODD EXPERIENCE While carrying out my duty on reporting crime in the state yesterday, I discovered one guy who was arrested last week and handed over to the police two weeks ago,” he wrote in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

“This was the second person on the list of rearrest in the last two months by BSCVG. The first was arrested at Yaman Park, Wurukum with a gun and handed to the police, only to be released by them and arrested by BSCVG again on similar offence.

“Our justice system is quite porous. This may give rise to jungle justice as reported yesterday evening around Balcony Parks. Even as we condemn acts of people taking the law into their own hands, it’s heart breaking to see some elements perpetrating same crimes after series of arrests,”
